The act of observation is the point of focus mentally, not necessarily the act of painting or drawing.
The painting or drawing becomes a secondary objective point. How the perception is developed to exclude the extraneous is the critical element en plein air. To remain in control of the medium by requiring of it less than is expected is one way to avoid unnecessarily high expectations that dampens the enthusiasm of the artistic enthusiast.
Work fast and use long encompassing brush strokes with the largest brush that is feasible.
